Whispers of Steam and the Rhythms of Rail: A Hour at Milner Royd Junction

 An Ode to a Historic West Yorkshire Rail Hub

Nestled in the lush, wooded valleys of West Yorkshire, just a stone's throw from Sowerby Bridge, lies a seemingly unassuming spot that pulses with the lifeblood of Britain’s rail network: Milner Royd Junction. This is where lines diverge, where commuter services swiftly move passengers, and where, on special days, the magnificent ghosts of the steam era roar back to life.

This visit on the 3rd November 2019, captured in a series of dramatic photographs, was a testament to the enduring allure of the railway, offering a captivating contrast between the past and the present, all within a few yards of each other.


The Crucible of Calderdale Rail: Milner Royd's History

The web of rails at Milner Royd is more than just a junction; it's a critical intersection whose history stretches back to the golden age of rail. It was established by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway (L&YR), the ambitious company that linked the great industrial centres of the north.

Milner Royd is the point where the main Calder Valley line (heading towards Brighouse/Wakefield/York) and the line towards Halifax diverge. This link to Halifax, opened in 1852, was crucial, providing a direct route for the important textile town to the burgeoning rail network.

  • The Silent Sentinel: A fascinating piece of history is the nearby Milner Royd Junction Signal Box, which, for many years, stood as a testament to the area’s heritage. The box was of considerable historic interest, one of the last surviving examples built by a small firm named Smith & Yardley for the L&YR around 1878. While the signalling equipment inside was updated over the decades, the very structure was a relic of early railway operations, only recently succumbing to modern rationalisation schemes. When you stand here, you are standing on a piece of ground that has been governing train movements for nearly 150 years.


The Present: Commuters and the Northern Fleet

The first trains to sweep around the wooded curve were the modern workhorses—the Northern Rail diesel multiple units (DMUs). These brightly-liveried trains, seen in sharp focus as they traverse the intricate points, represent the daily pulse of the region:




  • The Daily Grind: They carry the people of Yorkshire to work, school, and leisure, a constant, reliable rhythm that defines the contemporary railway. Their speed and efficiency are a marker of transport progress.

  • The Modern Landscape: These trains navigate an environment where the old absolute block signalling has been replaced by modern control systems, yet they follow the same ancient path laid down through the valley by Victorian engineers.


The Past Returns: The Might of Black Five No. 44871

Then came the star of the show, a magnificent machine whose power and majesty instantly connected the present-day scene with its past: LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 44871.




The images perfectly capture the drama of a mainline steam locomotive in full flight:

  1. The Roar: The rhythmic 'chuffing' grew into a thunderous roar as the engine tackled the curve.

  2. The Smoke and Steam: A gargantuan, billowing cloud of white steam and black smoke erupts from the chimney. This plume—thick, dramatic, and indicative of the immense effort being demanded of the engine—is the visual signature of steam power that no modern diesel or electric can replicate.

  3. A True Survivor: Looking closer at the number, we recognise a railway celebrity. The Black Fives (or 'Mixed Traffic' engines) were the quintessential all-purpose locomotive of the London, Midland and Scottish (LMS) railway and later British Railways. No. 44871, built in 1945, holds a special place in history, as it was one of the locomotives chosen to haul the famous "Fifteen Guinea Special" on August 11, 1968—the very last day of mainline steam operation on British Rail. Withdrawn from service the next day, it was preserved immediately, and today, owned by Ian Riley, it is a regular and powerful presence on heritage tours, often working the famed 'Jacobite' service in Scotland.

Seeing this locomotive thundering through Milner Royd Junction is not just watching a preserved engine; it is watching a living piece of history that participated in the very final chapter of the steam era.


More Than Tracks: A Living Heritage

Milner Royd Junction, set against the backdrop of the rugged Calder Valley, encapsulates the essence of the railway: a place of dramatic scenery, vital infrastructure, and profound history. It is a venue where the workaday reality of the modern commuter rail intersects with the thrilling, visceral nostalgia of a steam legend like No. 44871, proving that the magic of the railways is as strong today as it was over a century ago.

A Rare Sight in the Valley: TransPennine Express Diverted Past Brearley

The Calder Valley Line is a gem of Northern rail travel, known for its winding route through deep, green valleys and historic mill towns. But on June 1st, 2024, it offered up a sight rail enthusiasts rarely, if ever, get to see: a TransPennine Express (TPE) train from Manchester Victoria to Saltburn roaring through the valley floor at Brearley (near Luddendenfoot).


The Unexpected Visitor

Typically, the TPE services that run between Manchester and Saltburn use the main Leeds and York routes. These are the fast intercity links, and the local, slower-paced Calder Valley Line is usually reserved for Northern services.

However, due to scheduled engineering works elsewhere on the network—the inevitable weekend maintenance that keeps the UK rail network running—this particular TPE service had to take a detour. And what a magnificent detour it was.

I was positioned above the line at Brearley, near the historic stone retaining walls, with the lush, vibrant greenery of the valley providing a perfect frame. The sun, dappled by the clouds, illuminated the scene, making the purple rhododendron blossoms on the embankment pop against the deep forest green.

When the train appeared, it was a blur of blue and yellow against the landscape. The TPE livery is a familiar sight at major stations, but here, in the secluded valley, it felt like an interloper—a high-speed express briefly slowing its pace to appreciate the West Yorkshire scenery.


Capturing the Moment

I had my Nikon D3300 ready. Capturing a moving train in a forested valley is a classic photography challenge, especially when you want to convey the sense of motion against a stationary, beautiful backdrop.

To achieve that wonderful blur on the train while keeping the surroundings relatively sharp, I used a technique called panning. It involves:

  1. Setting a Slower Shutter Speed: Around 1/125th or 1/160th of a second was perfect to blur the wheels and the carriages just enough.

  2. Tracking the Subject: As the train approached, I smoothly moved my camera, keeping the main engine or a specific carriage door exactly in the same spot in the viewfinder.

  3. The Shot: Firing the shutter while still panning.

The result is a photograph where the train appears to stretch and streak, emphasising its speed and momentum, while the detail of the surrounding trees and purple flowers remains a sharp frame for the action. The motion blur on the train perfectly contrasts with the solidity of the valley.

This wasn't just a photograph of a train; it was a snapshot of a railway story—a fleeting moment where operational necessity created a beautiful, one-off photographic opportunity.


The Beauty of Brearley

The location itself, near the village of Luddendenfoot, is a photographer’s dream. The Calder Valley is one of the most rugged and rewarding sections of the Pennine route, carving its way through what was once a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution. Today, it’s a tranquil scene of stone-built villages nestled into the hillside, with the railway tracing the ribbon of the River Calder below.

For anyone looking to capture the romance of British railways, the Calder Valley Line—even on an ordinary day—offers endless compositions.

But seeing that big TPE heading to Saltburn on these tracks? That's one for the logbook! Always remember to keep your eyes open, because sometimes the best photo opportunities are the unexpected diversions.

A Journey Through Time: Mytholmroyd Railway Station

 On the last day of 2018, with my Nikon D3300 in hand, I took a stroll around Mytholmroyd, a village nestled in the heart of the Calder Valley. My destination was the railway station, a place that, like many others in this industrial landscape, holds a wealth of history and a quiet dignity. The photos I captured on that day tell a story of a place in transition—a past of industrial grandeur giving way to a new future.

The Old Station Building: A Glimpse into the Past

The most striking feature of the station is the original building. This Grade II listed building, with its rugged sandstone and classical lines, stands as a testament to the Victorian era of railway expansion. Opened in 1871 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, it was once the bustling hub of the community, complete with a booking hall, stationmaster's house, and waiting rooms. For many years, however, it sat derelict and boarded up, a sad sight for a building of such importance.

What the photos don't fully capture is the incredible story of its revival. After decades of neglect, a dedicated group of local volunteers, the Mytholmroyd Station Partnership, began a long-running project to bring it back to life. Their work, supported by grants from organizations like the Railway Heritage Trust and Northern, aims to transform the building into a creative community hub, breathing new purpose into this historic landmark.


The Viaduct and the Modern Station

The station is uniquely situated atop a magnificent viaduct, a feat of 19th-century engineering. The viaduct itself was built by George Stephenson and dates back to 1840, making it even older than the station building it now supports. From the street below, the imposing stone arches give a sense of the scale and ambition of the railway age.

While the old building was awaiting its new lease on life, the modern station was already serving the community. With two platforms, it's a vital part of the Calder Valley Line, connecting the village to major cities like Leeds and Manchester. The station is known for having step-free access to its platforms, a rare and helpful feature for a station built on a viaduct. The contrast between the old, unused entrance and the bustling modern platforms tells the story of a place that, despite its challenges, remains a crucial link for the people of Mytholmroyd.
