Old Images of Scarborough

Scarborough is a seaside resort in Yorkshire, Northern England. It is the largest town resort town in North Yorkshire and grew around the industries of fishing and tourism. Scarborough South Bay Bathing Pool

The construction of the south bay bathing pool was the brainchild of Harry W. Smith the former borough engineer for Scarborough. Whilst on a visit to Guernsey he became inspired by an outdoor pool they already had for bathers. Upon his return he proposed a pool that would feature different depths, diving boards, water chutes, changing rooms and showers, these would have been a first for Britain not just Scarborough. Construction started before World War One and the pool officially opened in 1915. The pool was built to help combat coastal erosion and was filled by fresh sea water daily due to the tides. The pool was a popular attraction until its closure in the 1980's when the site fell in to disrepair.

Scarborough North Bay Pier

Opened on the 1st May 1869, the North Bay Pier was constructed by Josiah Foster Fairbank as a steamer and promenade pier. Upon completion the pier reached a length of 1000ft (305m) out to sea, but was dogged by incidents from the start, frequently being hit by steamers at the head and never making much money, the pier changed owners several times and January 7 1905 a storm wrecked a large section of the pier leaving only the head and entrance standing. The pier closed after this and shortly after the head was demolished, with the entrance pavilion itself being demolished in 1914.

Peasholm Park

The video also features a number of images of Peasholm Park, opened in 1912 the park attractions include Peasholm Glen, putting green, boating lake where mock naval battles are staged 3 times a week during the high season and many types of plant life to walk around and enjoy. The park declined from the 1970's on and was closed for a time when fire destroyed some of the buildings in 1999. Due to heritage lottery funding the park has since been restored and is now a popular attraction again.

Other scenes of interest include the Turkish Baths, Floral Hall, Railway Station and Open Air Theatre. There are a total of 25 pictures to view taken from postcards.

Happy Birthday Mollie - Vintage Postcard

There's something uniquely charming about old postcards. They're not just pieces of paper; they're tiny time capsules, carrying messages and memories across the decades. In my own collection of celebratory postcards, there's a fascinating set sent to a woman named Mollie from various family members over a number of years. I'm excited to start sharing these little snippets of history with you.

The First Glimpse: A Simple Message from Dad

To kick things off, let's look at the very first card in the collection, a sweet memento Mollie received from her Dad on September 14th, 1936.

What strikes you immediately about this particular card is its beautiful simplicity. The front, which I can only imagine held a cheerful image fitting for a celebration, is unfortunately not something I have to share with you today. But the rear of the card tells its own story. It's clean and unfussy, bearing just two key pieces of information: "Mollie Stuart" written clearly, indicating the recipient, and then, signed simply "From Dad" with the date prominently displayed.

It's a testament to a time when communication, even celebratory, could be succinct yet deeply personal. There's no lengthy message, no flowery prose, just a direct and heartfelt acknowledgment from a father to his daughter.

A Glimpse into the Past: Unposted Vintage UK Postcards

There's something truly special about holding a piece of history in your hands, especially when it offers a window into a bygone era. We're excited to share a recent find: a set of six vintage postcards, each approximately 80 to 90 years old, all from the UK and, fascinatingly, all unposted. While their unposted nature makes precise dating a challenge, their charm and historical significance are undeniable.

Let's take a closer look at each one:

Flatford Bridge, Essex

Our first postcard features the picturesque Flatford Bridge, a well-known landmark situated about 13 miles northeast of Colchester, Essex. This charming bridge gracefully crosses the River Stour. The card itself was published by Judges LTD, Hastings, a prolific postcard publisher of the era.

Guy's Cliff Bridge and Waterfall, Warwickshire

Next up is a beautiful scene of Guy's Cliff Bridge and Waterfall, where the River Avon flows past Saxon Mill in Warwickshire. This card was published by W.A. Lenton of Leamington Spa, capturing a serene moment in the English countryside.

North Gate, Totnes, Devon

The third postcard transports us to the Devonshire town of Totnes, showcasing its iconic North Gate. This gateway holds historical importance, being a Grade II listed structure. This particular card is part of the Sepiatype Series by Valentine's, known for their distinctive sepia-toned images.

Bristol Cathedral

Moving on, we have a postcard depicting the grand Bristol Cathedral. This architectural marvel stands as a testament to centuries of history in the heart of Bristol.

Montgomery from Kerry Road, Powys, Wales

Our penultimate postcard offers a view of Montgomery as seen from Kerry Road. The name "Montgomery" is an English translation of "the town of Baldwin," and this town holds a unique position as a border town in Powys, Wales.

Temple Speech Room, Rugby

Finally, our set concludes with a postcard of the Temple Speech Room in Rugby. This impressive building is a notable feature of the historic town. This card, like the North Gate one, was also published by Valentine's, this time from Leamington Spa.

Vintage Postcards, Aspremont. Meggen, Jaffa and the Taj Mahal

Whilst sorting through my large postcard collection I have decided to digitise them all and share occasionally in addition to my own pictures.

The pictures in this post are unposted and undated but I am told they are from between the wars from the 1920's - 30's. Clicking any of the images should open a link in another window to my Colin Green Photography store on Zazzle.

Aspremont is a small village in south-east France, 10km north of Nice with a population of approx. 2190. I have searched for the tower in the background beyond the apartment blocks and I believe it is the tower of the Church of Saint-Jacques le Mejeur.


Jaffa (Yafo Hebrew, Yafa Arabic) is a port city in Tel-Aviv, Israel. The picture on the postcard which is unposted so not dated shows the coastline from what is the modern day Tel-Aviv Promenade.

Meggen is a mining community of approx. 2900 residents in Lennestadt, Western Germany.

The Taj Mahal, the most famous picture of the postcards featured. The "Crown of Peace" is a mausoleum close to the Yamuna River, Agra, Indian. Built between 1632 -53 as a tomb by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Journey Through Time: Sowerby Bridge in Pictures!

I'm thrilled to share a new project I've been working on that's really close to my heart: a series of three YouTube videos featuring historic pictures of Sowerby Bridge.

These aren't just any old photos; they're a window into our town's past, spanning the last 150 years! I recently came across a fantastic collection of images, and I've been advised they're all public domain and copyright-free. Some of these even belong to a Lilywhites postcards collection, meaning they're over a century old – imagine the stories they could tell!

My aim with these videos is to bring a bit of Sowerby Bridge's rich history to life for everyone to enjoy. You'll see familiar landmarks and perhaps even discover areas of the town as they looked generations ago.

Of course, if I've been misinformed about any copyright, please don't hesitate to let me know. I'm more than happy to credit the source or remove any picture at your request.
