4 Pictures taken on the 21st June 2023

 This set of were taken whilst out for a walk on the 21st June 2023 around the Pye Nest - King Cross area of Halifax.

Darnes Avenue, Pye Nest. A number of the back to back terraced houses in this area are also over - under dwellings, a type of house common in Northern England.

Washer Lane towards the Wainhouse Tavern, Halifax.

Washer Lane is named after a house known as Washer Lane that used to occupy a site nearby. It leads from the old turnpike Wakefield Road and ends near the wall viewed in the middle of the picture. The Wainhouse Tavern built in 1877 started life as a house known as West Air. Built for John Edward Wainhouse a local businessman, the unique building is known for each window being a different style. The building would eventually become a public house using the names The Royal, The Folly and currently The Wainhouse Tavern.

This closed off water trough can be found at Upper Washer Lane, Halifax. Usually their is a car parked in front of it so taking a picture is quite difficult. Built in 1878 the J.E.W satnds for John Edward Wainhouse who owned a nearby dye works, built the nearby Wainhouse Tower and lived a short walk away at West Air, now the Wainhouse Tavern.

The Prescott Fountain, Spring Edge, Halifax.

This drinking fountain was originally placed at Ward's End, Halifax in 1884 as a replacement for a stone horse trough that occupied the site. It was erected in the memory of Marion Rothwell known by her married name of Mrs Cyril Prescott. The fountain is made of Cornish granite, featured 4 small troughs for dogs, 2 larger horse troughs, 4 drinking taps for people and an ornate lamp above the central column. In 1898 the fountain was moved to a spot outside The Prince of Wales Feathers (now simply The Feathers), King Cross, before moving again in 1932 to it's current location at Spring Edge near to Crossley Heath School.

Vintage Images from the 70's and 80's.

 The following post features a random set of 4 images I recently digitised from my collection. The were taken in the 70's or 80's mainly in the United Kingdom.

River Thames and St Helen's Church Spire from Abingdon Bridge, Oxfordshire. The picture was taken in July 1986.

This picture taken at a date unknown in the 1980's and shows a English village scene, again i'm not sure which village is featured.

The picture shows Sugarloaf and Abergavenny Castle, Wales, taken in the 1970's I have also recoloured this picture as my original image was black and white.

Taken in a foreign land in the 70's or 80's, again i'm not sure of the actual date or location and will probably never know being a beach front sunset.

Sa Polleta des Punset and Entrance to Benirras, Northern Ibiza Artwork

 A short post of a digital artwork I recently created of a coastal scene I pictured in 2014 whilst sailing the northern coast of Ibiza. The scene pictures a rock I believe is known as the Sa Polleta des Punset which is found at the entrance to the cove of Benirras. On the day people were sailing and swimming out to the rock to use it as a diving platform. The picture shows a small boat to the side of the rock.

Abandoned Farm Building at Bradley

 I found this building whilst walking from Cooper Bridge to Brighouse trying to find a route alongside the Calder and Hebble Navigation.  I just happened upon whilst walking a track that crossed the railway leading down to the canal and with the gates clearly being locked I only photographed the building from the track passing as I am not sure about trespassing.

Anchor Pit Abutment

 Anchor Pit was once the site of a railway junction near Brighouse, West Yorkshire. It is where the Pickle Bridge line split from the Calder Valley Main line in the direction of Bradford until closure in 1952. Some of the lines structures remain to the north of the River Calder in the direction of Wyke, but to the south of the river not much evidence remains that their was once a railway junction here, except the remains of what was once part of the crossing over the the valley. This abutment pictured being the only remains.

I took these pictures on the 27th May 2023 with aNikon d3300 camera.

A Snicket In Brighouse

 Inspired by Bill Brandt's "A Snicket in Halifax", these 2 pictures show a similar stair climb in nearby Brighouse. Taken whilst walking the canal's from Huddersfield to Brighouse this set of steps is found near the former Anchor Pit Railway Junction at the end of Birds Royd Lane - Woodhouse Lane.

I took these 2 pictures on the 27th May 2023 with a Nikon d3300, they can also be seen full resolution and un-watermarked on Clickasnap.

Town Gate, Heptonstall and Hebden Bridge Signal Box Artworks.

 Created by me based on 2 pictures I took in November 2013 are these images of Town Gate the main road through the village of Heptonstall and the signal box at Hebden Bridge Railway Station. Both can also be seen on Clickasnap un-watermarked.

Willow Hall Dam Autumnal Artwork

This original artwork created by me is based on a picture I took in March 2018 around Willow Hall Dam, Sowerby Bridge. The day had seen a number of snow showers but i'd still gone up to the dam to get out of the house for a while. To the west of the lake are some old abandoned outbuildings -garages that were of interest even though they had nothing particularly characterful about them.

The original picture is shown above. Whilst I like the picture I didn't think that there was enough going on to make it in to an artwork, so I decided to give the artwork below an autumnal look fill of bright reds and oranges to give it a look of breaking dawn, the finished artwork below.

Sowerby Bridge Randoms

 Sowerby Bridge is a market town in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. Originally a crossing point over the River Calder the town grew fast during the industrial revolution on its proximity to the River's Calder and Ryburn that were used to power the textile and engineering mills that grew up around them. As time went on the Rivers were joined by firstly the Calder & Hebble Navigation Canal providing links to Wakefield and beyond, and then the Rochdale Canal with links to Lancashire and Manchester which helped to continue the growth of industry in the Sowerby Bridge area. The railways were next to arrive with Sowerby Bridge featuring a large goods yard at the modern location of Tesco and eventually becoming a railway junction town when the line opened up the Ryburn Valley.

The railway, canals, industries and town entered in to a period of decline after between the wars, that continued for many years after, with it's valley location making it difficult for modern industries to invest and many long standing companies withdrew from the town. In the 1980's the town marketed itself as a tourist destination with the town's annual Rushbearing parade, canoe slalom development and canal re-opening driving much of the regeneration.

The town remains a pleasant place to live, featuring in a number of TV shows in recent years including, Stay Lucky, Happy Valley and the English Game, although it is often overshadowed by it's near neighbours Halifax and Hebden Bridge.

Canal Bridges

 

Canal Bridges is a set of 20 pictures I took that shows a variety of Canal Bridges taken at various locations and on differing canals in the UK and Italy. They can also be seen on Clickasnap un-watermarked.

Bridge 199 on the Leeds - Liverpool Canal near Bingley. Taken with a Nikon d3300 on

the 9th July 2016.

Long Cut End Viaduct over the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Thornhill Nr Dewsbury. I took this with a Nikon d3300 on the 30th December 2019.

Bridge 59 on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, taken with a Nikon d3300 on the 25th July 2020 somewhere between Slaithwaite and Marsden.

Gauxholme Viaduct carries the railway over the Rochdale Canal between Todmorden and Hebden Bridge, I took this with a Samsung Galaxy Tablet on the 14th November 2013.

Concrete Pipe Bridge on the Rochdale Canal, I can't remember the exact location only it was somewhere between Littleborough and Walsden on the Rochdale Canal. Taken with a Polaroid is2132 on the 31st May 2014.

Not sure what the bridge is, but i took this on the Tennant Canal near Neath with a Nikon d3300 on the 20th September 2017.

Accademia Bridge over the Grand Canal, Venice, Italy, taken with a Nikon d3300 on the 30th October 2018.

Disused as a canal crossing for decades the bridge used to cross the Calder and Hebble Navigation Halifax Branch near Siddal, Halifax. I took this in June 2015 with a Polaroid is2132 on the Hebble Trail.
